In his Preface to Changing the Earth (1994), Emmet Gowin says that before a landscape,
“both the mind and the heart need to find their proper place.”  He says we may sense
two worlds: one of appearances and another hidden but for a map the photograph provides.  He says “This is the gift of a landscape photograph, that the heart finds a place to stand.”This exhibit reminds us that we are not alone in these landscapes, we are in community … if only of two.
Submitting these photographs is a gift to my husband.  We have lugged his large format cameras
to many remote areas, used a tiny digital camera walking the urban canyons of big cities.  Watching him as he works to frame his vision of place has been a wonder.  With him and his work, my heart
finds a place to stand.
