I photographed Maurice in his home
near Ranchita, California. I happened upon him on a desert highway when
I stopped to see a miniature village of dollhouses he made and had set up
in a display next to the road. Maurice, who was born in Mexico, told me
he left the hustle and bustle of L.A. to move to his new remote desert surroundings.
He lives alone with some cats on a mountaintop and spends his time painting
and making folk sculptures. Because I was caught off guard when meeting
him, I did not have a tripod, but Maurice kindly helped me stack up a collection
of National Geographics so I could rest my camera for this portrait. Maurice
painted all the paintings in the picture. |
