"Candle in the Window" is about the beauty of an unselfconscious woman in comfortable surroundings. She is reading, and there is a candle on the windowsill that she may need later. We know by the curtains that there is a breeze blowing. Her bottom is centered, undeniably the focal point, yet the eye is drawn to her eye, then to the candle, and around the painting. The red, green and violet provide rich and saturated darks which serve as a foil for the woman’s luminous body and the light coming through the window. This is art with a small ‘a’, since the viewer is engaged on a kinesthetic rather than intellectual level. There is no other message. You don’t have to think. Enjoy.
