On that wet, cold afternoon in Edinburgh the pavement was treacherous to walk on. Coming down some granite steps at the top of the Royal Mile, I slipped and sprawled forward onto the cobblestones. Good reflexes managed to save my Leica, but I banged up my right knee. As I limped back down the Royal Mile to my hotel, I walked through a construction shelter over a sidewalk. A girl was standing there, peering down the Mile. Aching knee or not, I found her face captivating. I made seven or eight pictures. In one of the shots three men collaborated with her to make what I consider a near-ideal composition. |
