I was assigned to photograph an Ellis Island dweller that had been there for two years, refusing to go back to Austria and not having been permitted to enter the U.S. I was fascinated by the place, which held new immigrants if their papers were not in order. I spend the day there and got quite a document of the famous institution, which a few years later, was closed.
