Ive always had a fascination for the insight
and discipline of the Japanese artist, especially those dedicated to the
practice of Sumi-e. The wisdom so evident in their simple use of black
and white line and form intrigued me. Having given it a try myself, however,
I decided to see what I could do with the black box instead of brush,
rice paper, and ink.
Experimenting with film developers separately and
in combination, I managed to come up with a process for film that is both
predictable and effective. Nuthatch Sumi-e, and Millpond are two images
from an ongoing series Ive been working on since 1988. Choosing
subjects with a suitable background is essential and patience, especially
when dealing with subjects in nature, is a prerequisite to getting the
images I really want.
