NOW MY SOUL, GOD DELIVERS, .COM

Marc Norberg

Icebox Gallery presents the work of Minneapolis based photographer Marc Norberg. Comprising photographic images captured on three continents, Now my Soul, GOD delivers, .Com features a diversity of familiar subject matter viewed from startling, and often humorous, perspectives. Minneapolis-based photographer Marc Norberg takes careful aim at everything from country vistas to toney perfume ads, combining timing and serendipity with flawless composition to evoke a sense of absurdity and freshness within what is usually presented as serious or commonplace.

Marc Norberg: Self-Portrait

While waiting for the Sky Cap outside the airport, a panel truck careens precariously close and almost runs you over. Catching your breath, you see the boldface writing on the side of the truck: GOD delivers. You wonder about the exact nature of this delivery.

Walking past a billboard, laden with mixed and peeling advertisements, you see the ultimate in subliminal marketing messages: Now my Soul.

Shortly after yours and every other investment portfolio in the country have lost almost 20% of its value, a second peeling billboard catches your eye. .Com is all that ís left on this advertisement, no doubt soon to be replaced by the new bellwether of good living.

Now my Soul, GOD delivers, .Com was created over the last three years and documents Norberg's personal journeys (carrying a camera with him at all times). This travelogue journal manifests itself in 36 black & white gelatin silver prints, created in natural light, spontaneous in process and intuitive in nature. In spite of their diverse geographic origins, the photographs reflect the fundamental intimacy, emotion, and yes, absurdity common throughout the world when images are discovered from different vantage points from which they were intended.

Marc Norberg is nationally recognized for his portrait work, as well as for his work with graphic design firms and advertising agencies. An avowed lover of all things musical, his portraits of musicians have graced countless magazine covers and CD jackets. In 1998, he was bestowed with Blues musicís highest honor, the W.C. Handy Award, for his seminal collection of Blues portraits, published in his 1996 monograph, Black & White Blues. Norbergís work has been exhibited nationally. He is a former instructor at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, and at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul.

Opening night for Now my Soul, GOD delivers, .Com will feature a street fair with music by the Butanes, the fire swallowers, FIRE Inc, and performances by, The Theater of Fools.
