Mending the Sacred Hoop
Images of Native America by Sarah
Penman published by ICEBOX GALLERY. The Chief Big Foot Memorial Ride, and the Future Generations Ride commemorate the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. The massacre at Wounded Knee symbolized to the Lakota the shattering of the Sacred Hoop which represents the unity of the Seven Council Fires of the Lakota Nation, and the prosperity, health, and spiritual well-being of the people. Birgil Kills Straight, one of the ride's organizers says, "Our understanding of the Sacred Hoop came from watching the heavens. For the past one hundred years, as individuals and as a nation, we have been spiritually crippled. Our prophecy said that for the next seven generations we would need to adapt. The purpose of the ride is to build a better future for our children and our grandchildren. Now, in this seventh generation we can rebuild a new philosophy, recover what was in the past. Let us tell the world we live, and will continue..." The purpose of the Unity Ride is to unite the Bands of the Lakota Nation, and the Bands of the Cree Nation. These rides are living history as traditionalist leaders work to build community through a reaffirmation of spiritual and cultural values.
