Exhibit Information
Icebox is an exhibition, promotion, and sales gallery as well as a quality custom frame shop established in 1988. We specialize in thought-provoking artwork and photography, predominately by Minnesota artists, but not exclusively.

Markets include: corporate collections, interior decoration, museums, and private collections.

Media Showcased: all
Artists represented: all

Icebox is a for-profit institution. Icebox receives no tax dollars or outside foundation funding. We rely on sales of art, t-shirts and quality picture framing. At times exhibiting artists have received individual grants that have paid for their own promotional materials.

Though artwork sales are taken seriously we are more interested in the quality and meaning of your artwork than with its value as a surface decoration or interior design element.

Icebox co-sponsors exhibits with the artist; show cards, postage, & promotional material expenses are paid for by the artist.

At first introduce yourself, visit the gallery, or come to an opening, then send materials that can be kept at the gallery and updated as needed. Artists with a complete new body of work that has not been exhibited in the Twin Cities area have the best chance for a solo exhibit. Send a letter telling us why you would like to exhibit at Icebox. Include slides and other appropriate materials for review.

About ICEBOX Gallery

Howard had been working as a custom picture framer since 1974. Early in 1988 he decided to merge his two interests...picture framing and art. He decided that many artists like himself did not fit the current gallery mold and many felt frustrated with a lack of opportunities to publicly show their artwork. Exhibiting a variety of artists became a significant part of what ICEBOX was, and it remains that way to this day.

ICEBOX remains self-funded. Exhibiting artists provide cash for the invitation cards and postage. ICEBOX provides a maintained and clean gallery space, mailing list, opening reception staff and many hours of promotion and exhibition development. Some artists in the past have received grant money from The Minnesota State Arts Board that has defrayed promotional costs.

Howard Christopherson curates and co-sponsors exhibits with talented artists who are often in transition or a period of experimentation. Many times the exhibit is planned based on the artist's past work. This allows the art time to evolve and the exhibit time to fit the atmosphere of the ICEBOX gallery.

"I look for an artist creating unique thought-provoking artwork. The media doesn't matter; how well it will sell doesn't matter. The artwork must feel ripe and ready to pick. The experience is what is important. A quality exhibition of a body of work will allow the artist to move on. Without an exhibition a artist can remain in a holding pattern, never experiencing the pressures of public and critical viewing. An exhibit, like a mirror, gives the artist a chance to look at who they are from three feet away." -Christopherson

ICEBOX founder Howard M. Christopherson has felt the need to express himself as an artist ever since he was a small boy. From a early age he has taught himself and created art in a wide variety of media including: drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation art, performance, film and video. His interest in a wide variety of media has made Christopherson an open and knowledgeable gallery director. "I love art, and I love to enhance quality artwork, whether it be with a picture frame design or exhibition design."
