Ascending a small dirt road from the desolation
of the colossal coastal sand dunes along the Pacific coast of Peru, I
slowly pedaled my way up into the Andes mountain range. Riding into the
night of February 22, 2003, a few miles past the old-world Andean village
of Catahuasi, I finally found a reasonable place to lay my sleeping bag
amongst the rocky and rugged terrain of the night. After a replenishing
meal of bread, cheese and sardines, I made my way to a tributary of the
Rio Vincente to wash up and prepare for slumber. I had no idea of the
beauty shrouded by darkness around me.
As I awoke to the frosty first light, the image
before you represents the beauty surrounding me. Brewing a cup of Coca
tea I simply sat and watched with joy as the world opened with shimmering
sunlight. I had to keep my excitement to a minimum, relax and let the
image come to me. I was patient this morning realizing I could not force
an image but must wait for a moment of clarity and only then could make
a meaningful picture. I hope this image inspires dreams, questions and
maybe a couple answers, enjoy.
